Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
