Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
