Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
