Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
