Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
