Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
