Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
