Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
