Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
