Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
