Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
