Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
