Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
