Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
