Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
