Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
