Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
