Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
