Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
