Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
