Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
