Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
