Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
